Start Star Hopping What? No Telescope?

Equipment

PLEASE do not rush to buy a telescope!!!

It is hard to see whole constellations looking through a telescope.

Constellations are so big, you find them best with just your eyes.

You will want:

Need: computer, printer, paper, scissors

Astronomers work in red light to protect their night vision. A bright white flashlight makes it very hard to see the stars after looking at a star chart. It can take your eyes up to one-half hour to be able to see the dark sky well after looking at a chart with a bright flashlight.

  • Red flashlight. Again, do not rush right out to buy one. Small household

flashlights work well. Larger flashlights put out too much light. A flashlight with red cellophane (food wrap) or red acetate

from report covers or florists will work to protect your night vision.

Make a Cellophane Light Filter: Need: red cellophane, rubber bands, scissors, flashlight. Fold or

cut the cellophane so you have a piece that fits over the front of the flashlight

with about an inch hanging down on the sides.

Put a rubber band around the cellophane on the outside of the flashlight.

Change how much light comes through the cellophane by adding or taking

away layers.

Make an Acetate Light Filter: Need: red acetate sheet, pencil, scissors, flashlight.

Take the bulb cover off the flashlight. Trace the outline of the cover onto the acetate.

Cut the circle you just traced. Place the bulb cover on the flashlight.

Put the red acetate on top of the cover. Screw the holder in place.

Make more red circles if you need more light blocked.

  • Bug spray - always bring!

  • Dress for the Weather - Check the weather forecast. A warm blanket is great for bundling up or wrapping around your shoulders if you get a chill even in the summer.

  • Hat with a bill – to help block nearby lights.

  • Drinking water

  • Snacks – optional

  • Binoculars – optional
